Emerging technologies can create new industries or disrupt existing industries. In the context of emerging technologies, a major problem faced by managers is making strategic decisions in the face of high uncertainty. In addition, firms need to develop adaptive capabilities to deal with the opportunities and challenges posed by such technologies. This panel features research on emerging technologies conducted at Wharton's Mack Center for Technological Innovation. In one of this panel's research presentations, we discuss how firms adapt to changing environments. Uncertain environments require firms to search for new, valuable configurations of activities and adapt their existing business models. Our research sheds light on the role played by organizational structure in guiding and hindering firms' attempts to explore and adapt. Another part of the panel discussion addresses the capabilities needed by firms to effectively work in alliances and networks. |
